I started collecting fans recently but the reason dates back to a few years ago. As a child I spent the summer with my grandmother and every morning, immediately after breakfast, we dedicated ourselves to a small ritual: the choice of the fan. This was the only thing that gave us relief during the scorching days when the white curtains remained motionless, the cicadas sang incessantly and the TV only offered reruns. Each fan (in wood, with Chinese shapes or gold embroidery) told a different story. Once my aunt came to lunch, a woman with aquiline features employed in some public office. As soon as I picked up an Andalusian-style fan she pinned her eyebrow and said: "What are you doing, do you use the fan like sissies?". I quickly put it in place, covering myself with shame and sweat. From that day on, my grandmother lost her companion in the morning ceremony.
Thanks to this episode I have learned a lot. The first thing is that in some countries the use of the fan is common among both women and men. The second, more practical, is that living "sissy" things as a taboo is a tiring waste of time. The sooner you let go of tired ignorance and sticky prejudices, the sooner you are free to do what you like best without feeling guilty. Guaranteed.
For this reason, I started collecting fans, starting with the ones my grandmother left me. Today I chose this. Happy Pride month!
